Are You Doing Your Eye Exercises?

When you think of exercise the first thing that comes to mind is probably lifting weights or running on the treadmill. But did you know that your eyes need exercise as well? Eye exercises will keep your eyes healthy and can help minimize eye strain.

Here are a few simple exercises that will strengthen your eye muscles and possibly even improve your vision:

Blinking - When you blink your eyes they are going into a brief period of darkness. This helps to keep your eyes fresh by discharging previous information and allowing for new information to be processed. Blinking helps in the reduction of eye strain. Many people, especially those that are staring at a computer or TV screen for the majority of the day may actually lack in blinking. That is because they are intently focused on something specific. By taking a break from what your doing and blink your eyes every 3-4 seconds for a 2 minute period can actually make your eyes feel rejuvenated.

In addition blinking can help with your communication skills. For example, when someone stops blinking and stares at you when you are talking it’s usually a sign of aggression. However whenever you are talking to someone and they are blinking at a 3 -4 second interval it’s a sign of a relaxed and friendly listener.

Figure Of Eight – This exercise will increase your eye’s flexibility. It involves imagining a giant figure of eight about 10 feet in front of you. Visually in your mind turn the 8 on it’s side. With your eyes now visually trace the figure of eight slowly. Do it one way for a few minutes and then do it the other way for a few minutes. Another person seeing you do this exercise may think you look bizarre but it may just make your eyes feel real refreshed and flexible.

Focusing During Zooming -For this exercise stretch out your arm with your thumb in the hitchhike position. Focus on your thumb as your arm is outstretched. Now bring your thumb closer to you, focusing on it the entire time, until your thumb is about 3 inches in front of your face. Now move your thumb away again until your arm is fully outstretched. Repeat the process a few times during the day. This exercise should strengthen your focusing skills and your eye muscles in general.

Exercise is very important for your body, including your eyes. But like all other exercises everyone’s body works and reacts different based on the exercise being performed. These tips aren’t meant for everyone and you should speak with your eye doctor ahead of time before trying them, as they may not all be suitable for you.
