Unraveling the Mystery of 20/20 Vision

Growing up, there were the kids who dreaded the yearly school eye exam, and those who had no fear. These two groups were easily identifiable by those with 20/20 vision and well, those of us with four eyes, a.k.a. reading glasses. These kids would brag about having perfect 20/20 vision without any real knowledge of what that means in terms of visual acuity.

What is 20/20 Vision?

20/20 vision is such a common term used to describe those with ‘perfect’ vision. What it really means is that you can clearly see from 20 feet what normal eyes should see at that distance. The whole 20/20 vision phenomenon only refers to the sharpness and clarity of your vision at a distance. In essence, 20/20 vision is normal eyesight without any indication as to the precision of your peripheral awareness, eye coordination, depth perception, or your ability to focus and identify colors.

Let’s say you have 20/80 vision. That means you have to stand as close as 20 feet from what those with 20/20 vision can see at 80 feet. 20/10 vision means that you can see fine detail from 20 feet away while someone with 20/20 vision needs to stand 10 feet away to see that same detail. If you have 20/10 vision, bragging is allowed, but 20/20 vision just means that you have perfectly normal vision.

Remember, when it comes to 20/20 vision, the top number is the distance you’re standing from the eye chart and the bottom number represents how far a person with normal vision can be from the chart and still read each line. Simply put, the closer you need to stand to the chart, the higher that bottom number will be. Again, this only measures your visual acuity and nothing else.
