How To Prevent Cataracts

Did you know that cataracts affect more than 22 million Americans? This cloudiness in the lens of your eyes disease though doesn’t just affect seniors but younger people as well.

Many eye doctors are seeing a huge increase in cataracts at a much younger age then they have seen in the past. The reason is detection.

While cataracts for many are age related, there are other factors that cause the condition. Diabetes, smoking and large amounts of alcohol consumption can also play a factor.  There are though some ways to help prevent them from occurring:

  • Multivitamins: Multivitamins that are high with antioxidants can help in decreasing the risk of cataracts.  Supplements with vitamins A and C can also assistant with keep that blurriness out of your eyes.
  • Diet: A person’s diet can also affect if someone gets diabetes. Diets that include colorful fruits, vegetables and whole grains have shown a decreased risk of diabetes. Fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids also can help prevent cataract progression.
  • Sunglasses: Ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun may contribute to the development of cataracts. Wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet B (UVB) rays when you’re outdoors.

Cataracts can be a devastating disease as it can potentially lead to blindness.  If though you take care of your eyes and your overall health as well goes for regular eye exams you should be able to prevent the disease all together or at least minimize it to a degree.
