Eye Sunburn and Your Vision

With many of us traveling to warm, sunny destinations for the holidays, we are for sure packing suntan lotion to protect our skin.  But, did you know the sun’s rays can also burn your eyes – and you might not even notice it until after the damage is done.

While it may sound strange, eye sunburn isn’t uncommon. When visible areas of the eye is exposed to the sun for more than 30 minutes, UVA and UVB light can damage the cells on the top layer of the eye. If this occurs, light sensitivity, blurry and burning vision can potentially occur and last for days and even weeks.

You can protect your eyes though with a quality pair of shades. Here are two qualities you should look for:

  • UVA and UVB protection. Sunglass lenses should include 99 or 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. This will help effectively shield your eyes from these harmful sunrays.
  • The size of your lens should also be a factor. By having bigger size lenses will protect more of your eyes. For example, the Everest EcoClear Sunglasses. They should sit close your face so the sun’s rays can’t sneak between the glasses and your eyes.

You only get one set of eyes. Don’t let the fun of the holiday season go away because of an eye injury. Pick up a great pair of affordable sunglasses before you leave for your sun-filled getaway! They for sure will come in handy! Happy holidays.
