No matter who you are and how healthy you are, we all age. During the aging process our body’s breakdown and don’t work the way they did when we were younger. That includes our eyes.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to prolong your eyesight and keep them as healthy possible. Here are a few things to consider. Some more obvious while others may surprise you:
- Always wear sunglasses when outdoors during the daytime. That includes during days that are really cloudy. By shielding your eyes will help protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, which can prevent cataracts, pinguecula and other eye issues.
- Exercise and a healthy diet can help with your eye health. By simply walking can reduce age-related macular degeneration by 70 percent. Diets that include large amounts of fruits and dark green vegetables can help reduce the risk of cataracts as these foods include great antioxidants.
- Not only should you have annual eye exams but regular physical exams are essential for eye health. That is because during these exams your physician can check for diabetes and high blood pressure, which if left untreated can lead to vision loss and from a variety of different diseases.
In addition to these tips remember always to wear safety glasses when working with machinery or when playing sports such as racquetball. Eye injuries from these types of activities could result in permanent eye loss.
The more you are informed the better you will be able to take care of your vision no matter how old you get!
